Many people have multiple bags, but only one can be used at a time, leading to household clutter and waste.
What if handbags had another purpose?
Design a multipurpose handbag which can convert between a stylish bag and intricate wall decor.

We decided to utilize traditional origami folding techniques for a seamless, flexible transition between the bag’s 2 forms.

After experimenting with various fold patterns in paper, we made a fabric mockup with an inner lining and working drawstrings. We also tested a cellulose based paper-like fabric for the origami folded exterior.
We found this bag form to be overly rectangular and sharp. In addition, the folds became dense and unwieldy. We continued to iterate fold patterns based on our learnings from this prototype.

To secure the bag to the wall, we designed a mount to live permanently on the wall, with embedded magnets to easily locate the bag into place.
Since the mount would often be exposed, we designed the mount itself to also be elegant and mirror the bag.
The drawstrings also needed to be separated to fold, so we designed a latch utilizing the same visual language. These magnetically latch within the lining to store out of the way.

Enfold is a transformable bag designed to challenge the cycle of fast fashion and overconsumption. When not in use, it folds up into a decorative wall piece, giving it purpose beyond its primary function and extending its lifespan. Inspired by origami, the bag utilizes repetitive folds that enable it to flex between forms. The exterior is made from Kraft-Tex, a cellulose-based material that offers the durability and flexibility of leather without the harmful chemicals used in traditional leather production. Sustainably crafted, Enfold reduces environmental impact and promotes longevity without compromising aesthetics.
